Hey, hi, hello!
If you know me, you'll know I love words and writing with my entire heart.
If you know me, you'll also know I tend to procrastinate because I'm worried my finished product will be less than perfect.
This blog is my attempt to flex my writing muscles (something I haven't done in entirely too long) and to embrace imperfection and all of it's unfinished loveliness. I don't expect anything on this blog to be anything other than a work in progress; just like me!
That being said, I want my first blog post to be something that I'm equally proud of and scared about, so without further ado, here's the first piece of writing I've shared publicly since middle school. I hope reading this poem helps you as much as it helped me to write it!
Someday I'll Love Jenna Palmieri
Jenna, you are strong
you hold the fortitude of the redwoods in your too-wide thighs
the tenacity of a city-borne sapling in your restless fingers
the courage of a star in your patchwork heart.
Your mother's words, stuck in your ear, will fade behind
the ones you deserve to hear.
It is not a coincidence that the blood in your veins runs bright as rubies,
you are precious.
It is not a coincidence the words you trace with your tongue have filled the mouths
of the warrior women before you.
It is not a coincidence that the love you pour like wine
returns to you, clear and crystalline on a hot day.
Jenna, listen
Do you hear the voices whispering, slipping through the cracks?
They wrap you in silver, shining armor against the cannon fire of your own doubt.
You speak a language of light and longing looks
Don't apologize for the scars you illuminate,
They are lightning reminders of battles you once won.
Hold the faded memories of long-forgotten laughter in your palms
and the aching wounds of fresh heartbreak behind your ribs.
Breathe them in.
You fight to scrape away the most beautiful parts of you to fit a grave carved out for someone else.
Someday someone will run their fingertips over them in perfect reverence
and you will wonder why you were so blind to the soft loveliness under your skin.
Someday I will love you.
And someday that will be all you need.
